Orientation Handbook (pdf) This document is formatted to print out double-sided. It is recommended that you leave a copy of this with your family.
All students must have a passport that is valid for at least 6 months after the final date of travel. All US citizens should check http://travel.state.gov/passport/ for details on obtaining their passport.
All foreign (non-Turkish) nationals will require a research visa to carry out archaeological investigations in Turkey. Please contact the instructor by e-mailing yukiko.tonoike@yale.edu as soon as possible for information on application procedure.
It is best to apply for a research visa as soon as you are interested, even if you are not yet sure of committing to the course, due to the processing schedule of Turkish research visas.
Please check with your doctor about necessary vaccinations. Yale students should make an appointment with the Travel Clinic as soon as they decide to apply. We will be visiting Istanbul, central Turkey (Nigde, Cappadocia), and southern Turkey (Alanya). Tetanus shots are strongly recommended for participating in archaeological excavations.
Please contact instructor by e-mailing yukiko.tonoike@yale.edu for details on flight arrangements.
Please purchase the following two textbooks prior to departure. Online purchasing is recommended. Please contact instructor if you have any trouble locating the textbooks.
Other required readings will be available as PDF files on the course’s Classes V2 server (https://classesV2.yale.edu) or as paper handouts.
Please peruse the following website www.turkishculture.org for some useful background information on Turkey and Turkish culture.
In addition, a pre-trip reading assignment will be posted shortly.
